Postcards from Elsewhere
Project type
Portraits, short videos
Date
June 2025
Location
Tel Aviv
June 2025. Israel is at war with Iran. For 12 days straight, the missiles haven't stopped. There is no shelter in my building; the nearest one is 400 meters away. I have three minutes to grab my essentials and run. The sky is closed, with no flights in or out.
So, I decided to create my own escape. Using AI, I built a parallel universe where I am free to be whoever, wherever, and whenever I want. Through these 12 days, I took the liberty of slipping into the lives of different women, wearing their identities like a synthetic costume. Or perhaps I was just exploring the hidden, eccentric corners of my own self?
While generating my "Postcards from Elsewhere," I was thinking about female artists like Cindy Sherman and Laurie Simmons. They were significant voices at the time, and deeply influential to me personally when I started my photography studies at Bezalel Academy. I was intrigued by the ability of photography to enable the exploration of identity and the self. I feel that Gen AI tools are adding a new layer to this exploration.
It was a project with a deadline, a commitment to last only as long as this round of fighting. And so I did.
